Collector's Marks

A place of knowledge:

Les Rencontres Internationales du Salon du Dessin

More than a place dedicated to dealing, the Salon du Dessin is also a place where knowledge is exchanged. For the last two years, Guillaume Scherf, head curator of the Sculpture Department at the Musée du Louvre, has led the “Rencontres Internationales” [International conference] that has offered a complete overview of sculptors’ drawings. During the 2010 edition, professionals and the general public will come together around the subject of collector’s marks. These marks, similar to ex-libris in books, play a crucial role in the reconstruction of a drawing’s past history and confirm its provenance. Under the aegis of Pierre Rosenberg from the Académie française, the symposium has been devised by Peter Fuhring, scientific advisor at the Fondation Custodia. During two days, on the 24th and 25th March, international specialists will share their knowledge and address the theme from various angles: collector’s marks in the British Museum holdings, in the Frits Lugt collection, in the collections of André Finot and Karl Cobenzl…

The proceedings of the symposium, truly a work of reference, will be published in the autumn.
